got a popping sound from under the center console when i was pulling into a driveway today. front tires got stuck in a rut so i gave it some gas to get out and i got a pop/loud click 3 or 4 times
how can i check my transfer case.....my 4hi doesnt seem engage untill just about the neutral position.....could my noise be the transfer trying to connect or partaly connected when it appears to be in 2wd and the leaver doesnt feel like it can go back any more past neutral postion....

Could be the linkage, but if you had it in 4wd when it popped; I'd say it's the T-case chain slipping. Just had a knock down drag out session with my case because of this.

upon close inspection i found my motor mount bolts sheared right off!
engine dropped a few inches and the mounting bracket caught on something on the engine still holding it up....relatively.....2 or 3 inch drop maybe but enough to cause problems and a dead in driveway jeep for the time being!
love hate relationship....
i love....the jeep hates me back

Could have saved 2 pages of guessing had you gone and checked right away.
Oh well.

....and like i said the mount caught on the engine so they where positioned like normal against the side of the block.....just not where they are supposed to be
Is this likely the case of the hole in the block not being deep enough? The net is that a tight bolt doesn't give you a tight mount.
I was told that my `97 is prone to this factory defect. Waiting for warmer weather to check with a feeler gauge. That warmer weather is now here.
