Default Grinding problem.

I have a 96 xj automatic. I'm having a prob with grinding when taking off fast or while going gassing on it and making it down shift from 3rd to 2nd or from 2nd to 1st. when it does grind it acts like it losses some power but when it doesnt grind it runs great. Any idea of what it might be?

Try looking at the tranny mounts. I had similar issue and it was a bad mount, which was cheap thank god. But, it could be a Loy of things.

It's hard to tell. About where the bell housing bolts up. I thought it might be the torque converter being loose on the fly wheel. I really haven't had the time to check anything on it so i take it easy driving it cause it's my dd.

Well it took some time to be able to check things out and I did find 2 things.
1st thing I found was the motor mounts are bad.

2nd is the transmission mount, the rubber piece is in 2 pieces.

Got the parts ordered along with upper and lower ball joints and steering stabilizer. I hate to dig to much more into it cause I'm afraid of what else I might find.

Well here is what the trans mount looks like. The one on the left is the old one.

Got the bad motor mount changed out today.

Drove it and no more grinding.

Awesome! Thanks for posting your findings!!

Not everyone does this, and sometimes threads go unanswered!

And now I know a few other things to check!

Well I'm reusing an old thread of mine cause of the title. Well I was in town this afternoon and took off kinda fast cause I realized I needed to be in the other lane cause of where I was needing to go. Well there was the grinding sound and it stayed. When I got home I couldn't hear it at idle but tap the gas peddle and there it is along with a shake and a few metal shavings in the oil on the dip stick. Looks like I'll be taring it apart to see what all is wrong with it.
