I dont think there is any one to look for. Its pretty standard. Just give it a good once over. There are lots of things to look at but you said you're going to check everything over so that doesnt leave much room for any help from us.

Make sure all the suspension and steering is tight up front, should have much play at all. Make sure the 4x4 actually works!! If you dont have dirt just throw it on in the street with room to turn. You should feel the wheels slipping in a tight turn. dont do it long cuz its not good for the 4x4 but just to check it out you'll be good.

you never, ever want to drive in part time 4 wheel on dry pavement. and full time won't bind up like that.

I know its not good but if you dont have any off road access its better than not testing it and getting home to find its busted. All you need is 5-10 feet and you'll know if its engaged or not.

Exactly. I had to do it a couple weeks ago when I bought my 98. Dash light didnt come on so I was left with no choice. Its not that big a deal.

My dash light doesn't come on either. There is a switch that goes out I think you can buy, but I tested mine on a dirt road, don't care about the light, my 4wd works, all that counts. If you throw it in 4 on pavement as said before(and not a good thing to do) it will bind big time in a tight turn and you will know it is in 4, trust me.
