I've got a 88 xj with a fuel injected in line 6. It sees to have developed a fuel leak all of the sudden.

It's leaking a lot of fuel from the tube that the injectors are connected to. At the end of the fuel line at the front of the engine there is a small cylinder that is plugged into the tube. the cylinder also has a vacuum line on it and the fuel return line. I'm thinkin its the fuel pressure regulator.

The giant leak is coming from where that "pressure regulator" plugs into the fuel tube. I've replaced the reguator with a used one off a 1990 and had the same problem. I put the used regulator back on its original fuel tube and then replaced the original leaky tube and regulator with the used tube and regulator form the 1990. Same problem.

The return line is not plugged. I can run air trough it.

is there any way this thing can be getting over pressurized or do I need to go buy a new regulator?

I had that same problem from not replacing the O ring when removing/reinstalling mine. The parts stores were closed and I needed the Jeep first thing the next morning so I used an old (but not ripped) fuel injector O ring. It was a tight fit but it never leaked since.

make sure you apply a little oil grease some thibg to ring

I did not replace the O ring. It looked good so I didn't mess with it. I'll have to give that a try. That would be an easy fix.

I tried an o-ring from an old fuel injector. I did the job. I wasn't real tight but it did feel a lot better than old one or the one off of the 1990
