I have a 2006 Grand Cherokee 5.7 litre Limited.

Wife drove it today and said the shifter will only move from Park to Reverse.....will not go in to Neutral or Drive. She said there seems to be resistance when she tries to move past reverse. She also said the shifter cover ( the small rubber or plastic piece surrounding the shifter ) starts to crinkle up when she tries to go to neutral. Sounds like something is binding up underneath the shifter cover. I haven't actually seen it yet. Any ideas from anyone? Thanks

Not sure how a '06 GC shift cover would come off but my guess is stuff fell down in there. You say she so it is the wife's vehicle? Know how they like to put there rubber hair bands and srungee things around the shifter? Would not surprise me if something fell down in there. Loose change? Etc?

 

Thanks Ralph. That certainly might be a possibility. Assuming this is the case, would I need to remove the cover to fix this? If so, do you know of any videos or instructions on how to do this? I have never removed it before....don't want to mess anything up. Thank you.
