Default Gear selector Ticking

Hello folks,
As I'm still new to my XJ I've been discovering new issues on a daily basis. It's my 99 XJ, 4.0, with 4WD. One of concern is a strange ticking sound coming from the console area near the gear selector. It seems to start after the vehicle warms up and noticable when I'm sitting at a stop light. It may continue as I drive however goes unnoticed since its drowned out by driving noises. The ticking is consistant and steady at about 2 ticks per second and remains steady regardless of RPM's or vehicle speed. It continues if I shift into neutral or park. I've pushed up/down on the transfercase gear selector to see if it was perhaps bushings in the linkage since I read that in an earlier post. I was hoping this might be a common issue that is easily diagnosed.
Any thoughts would surely be appreciated!

Lifter tick would change consistancy with rpm variations.

Agreed, but I think you meant the Evaporation Solenoid mounted on the passenger side firewall. It will start clicking when closed loop is achived. There is a rubber mount beteen the solenoid and its mount on the firewall. If the rubber mount (isolator) is missing, or improperly installed, it will amplify the 'ticking' from the solenoid and sound like the engine is ticking.

Other than that, the transfer case linkage may be loose and rattling. My Heep does this at stop lights. If I pull back on the TC selector handle it will stop rattling.
