ok... they had 3.73's in 4 banger also... in fact theres on in my junkyard now thats a 4 banger with 3.54's so gotta get this junk right... people read these even when there like 8 years old... SOME 4 banger xjs's had 4.10 and yes this would be your cheapest option... in fact rumor has it that there were some made with 4.56's but thats a RUMOR for now... as for going d35 vs d44... i would never buy and regear a D35... however if it was a street driven maybe alittle off roadin XJ then i would stick a cheap easy to find 8.25 in mine... D44's are hard to come by... even though ive found 2 this year in the same JY a mile away... lol
Dana 30: lower=3.55 and down, higher=3.73 and up
Dana 35: lower=3.31 and down, higher=3.55 and up
Dana 44: lower=3.73 and down, higher=3.92 and up
Chrysler 8.25 (both the 27 and 29 spline versions): 2.56 and up use the same carrier, with obvious variation being on the spline count of the specific axle.

yeah, those stock gearing ratios were all set to specific axles and specific packages, like the towing package, or Up Country package and what not. typically, these are the gears you can use on either the lower and higher carriers will allow for each axle:
Dana 30: lower=3.55 and down, higher=3.73 and up
Dana 35: lower=3.31 and down, higher=3.55 and up
Dana 44: lower=3.73 and down, higher=3.92 and up

3.07, 3.55, 3.54 all on the smaller carrier or "higher gears"
3.73, 4.10, 4.11, 4.56, 4.88, 5.13 all the larger carrier "lower gears"
the carrier brakes what i posted already... what you posted here is all backwards and confusing...

In theory, if you have the NP242 tc, you could drive with two different gear ratios in 4wd full time, the central differential would take care of the ratio difference. Anyway if you stay in 2wd you can temporarly do that.

the front will bolt in... the rear you will have to modify... your jeeps rear leafsprings... the rubicons have rear coil springs... really not that hard to do though...

now this is real confusing... and im pretty sure i would have to disagree with all of them... the lower the gear the higher the number... and them numbers are all wrong...

3.73, 4.10, 4.11, 4.56, 4.88, 5.13 all the larger carrier "lower gears"

he meant numerically....as in 3.07 is numerically lower than 3.55....and i do agree with his numbers because i have been looking into re-gearing my '91 w/ 3.55s to 4.10s and need a new carrier
to the OP: for the front you will need a new ring gear, pinion gear, carrier, and master rebuild kit (i priced this at around $300 without shipping or labor) or you could find a factory 4.10 D30 from a 4cyl XJ
for the rear I would suggest looking for a Ford 8.8" rear, they can be frequently found with factory 4.10s and sometimes LSD, they require new spring perches and shock mounts that will need to be welded on, I priced this to less that $100, but does require good welding

Not a rumor. The 4:56 gearing was used with the 4cylinder and AW-4 trans in early XJ/MJ's. These were not common obviously.
