gauge problems after swap

i just swapped clusters from a 96 to a 92 xj to get rid of the dummy lights. when i turn on power the gas gage pegs out past full !! any help will do .. also would it matter if the engine is out?

96 to 92 may not be compatible. There was some design changes in 96. It sounds like that wire has gone to full ground. The way gas gages work is to meter the amount of grounding and thus the distance the needle moves. You will also need oil pressure and coolant temp senders. The coolant temp may not be compatible since it is OBDII

I had the same proble with mine,mine is an 89 and I tried to put a later model pump assembly in it and it read full,because the sending unit is opposite of mine,when i took it out and placed it at full it read empty,I already had the pump out so I just used my old one.
