Default gas tank woes....

sothe other day i busted my tank open...got around to changing it out today with a buddy....

so while removing the fuelpump from the old tank, we noticed some "putty" that was hard and cement like around the elec connections and at the bottom of the seal on the fuel pump metal O-ring locker....(kinda looked like welded metal...)

so in order to remove the pump we had to use a chisle and gently tap and remove this putty, we replaced the fuel pump, installed the tank, and done...

i got home, then when i went to leave to give my mom a lift, she told me that from the outside ofmy truck when started it reaked of gas, i got out, and noticed it reaked as well...so i got out and checked, and although its night and hard to tell, it would seem its leaking from the pump, weather its from the seal, or the wires in the middle...i figure itis leaking from where the putty was holding(still dont know exactly what it was there for, i didnt do it it was like that when i bought it)...

so im wondering, what was that putty stuff? if there a quick cheap way of fixing it for a few weeks? or do i gotta buy a new pump?

Mine leaked from the electrical connections, but that was because I was an idiot and pried on them with a flat head... I just needed to push mine back in, but it sounds like you need some sealant around the connections, or better yet, a new pump, if that actually is the leak :P
They make a gas tank hole repair sealant, so that might be it?

well the putty that was previously on there covered the electrical conections and part of the seal, but i replaced the tank which came with newseals...

the metal fittings themselves on the sending unitwere fine, no rust, in goodcondition, but im thinking that i should recheck the clamps on them in the morning just in case....

i should alsomention that although it was night and i couldnt see well, it sure looked like there was a tiny bit of gas leaking from the "T" where the 2 breather/vacuum lines come from the top of the tank, right at the T it looks like there is a tiny leak but nothing compared to the leak comming from the sending unit its self, there was soo much gas that i couldnt really tell where it was comming from, but it looked as if it was either comming from the seal, or the center(electrical connections)

and like i said it only leaks when truck is on

ill check better in the morning, but to be honest im looking for the cheapest fix possible, within the last 2 weeks ive spent over 3500 on my jeeps and now im **** poor broke, lol...replacing the tank was the last i had hoped for a while...

If it only leaks when it's on, it leads me to believe there is a leak in the fuel line somewhere.

Let it dry, and climb under there immediately after turning it on, or have a friend turn it on. Monitor for leaks, and make sure to not get gas spilled on you

ok was much better to see in the daytime....even got to take a few pics...

before turning it on

before turning it on

seconds after starting truck

seconds after starting the truck

and as you can see in the last pic, it kinda sprays gas from the pressure....

so can this be fixed with epoxy/putty or whatever its called? i mean a temp fix for a month or sotill i can afford a new unit?

gonna try it out and see how it works

+1 no need for a BBQ, park it till you can repair it correctly.

ETA:

WOW, do you defuse bombs for a living or something? I would seriously mess my pants if I was that close to something like that.
