He didn't say it was. Just implied that there is none lower nearby the OP. If you live in Maine you're not going drive all the way to ****ing Colorado for gasoline because some guy on the Internet said there's lower out there somewhere...

Actually, that is exactly what he said. He said in the USA you won't find lower than 87, It was not implied, it was stated.

It may reduce power and economy while increasing engine deposits. Nothing dramatic, just stop using it.

Are we starting to nit pick or what? Let me modify my statement again. Would it be safe to say that there r some places in the USA with gas below 87 octane? Would it be safe to say that the majority of minimum octane gas in the USA is 87? Does this nit picking have anything beneficial to do with the OP? Geese.

I seem to have inserted an additional "if" into his post when I read it. At any rate it's an extremely irrelevant point as only a small percentage of Americans can even find 85 octane, (only available in certain areas of states which have less than 5% of the country's population to begin with), and availability is waning due to manufacturer warranties being voided by it and places like South Dakota adding warning labels in 2012 that damage can occur if misued (technically it's illegal there).

For all intents and purposes, when speaking to a broad audience, the practical minimum is 87.
