Exclamation Gas issue please help

I have had my 1998 XJ for 4 days now. Yesterday while driving, it was getting gas just fine then the RPMs would drop as if no gas was getting in the enigine. A few seconds later the RPMs would jump back up as if the engine gained gas again. This would happen 5 or 6 times in a row then not at all. I parked the XJ for about 2 hours then went for a drive again, same thing happened. Yes the gas tank has gas... please help... could it be the fuel pump going out?

You want to do a fuel pressure test if you suspect the fuel pump is failing. You can usually rent a test tool from your local auto parts retailer for free (with deposit). Your pressure should be 49.2psi +- 5 per the spec.

If it's happening consistently like that, it should be pretty easy to test.

You also should consider replacing your fuel filter since you don't know when the last time it was done.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the XJ. If your fuel pressure test checks out, I would think its the CPS that's causing issue. Lots of info out there and on this forum about them for good reason. Pull yours and test it, and if it's bad make sure you shell out for a Mopar replacement, aftermarket brands are often bad out of the box.

Is the check engine light on? Checking any trouble codes would help if so. Also there's a couple of different sensors that could cause similar problems.
