Default Horrible gas mileage please help asap

Ok to start like i said before i got a high idle one night and popped the hood and unplugged the tps and it idled normal, but i seen that my exhaust manny was red? idk what that means maybe an 02 sensor. Another reason y i think its an 02 sensor is cuz i get 8 mpg babying it and puttin it in nutral down hills idk what to do but i need to get this fixed soon along with my gas gauge cuz that is stuck at quarter tank but im goin to drop the tank and put a pump and sending unit into it..

new plugs, just regular ones. not those fancy ones. leave those for sports cars. gap them to .035.

also change out or clean your O2 sensor. you can use brake cleaner.

that should get you back to normal, or damn near.
if not, then it's time for cap/rotor, wires, fuel filter, injection cleaner..........

Do you also have a loss in power? You might have a clogged cat. Especially if your header was red. Good Luck!!

Dud, you know as well as I do that if you "turbo it" that you're going to be heavy on the right pedal and thus getting even crapier mpg than you are now. So, that isn't much of a solution. All of the things that the guys have mentioned are what will effect/improve fuel mileage. Ensure air intake and filter is free flowing. Ensure exhaust is free flowing (glowing exhaust manifold indicates a problem there). Ensure O2 and MAP sensors are working correctly. Get a can of carb. cleaner and a tooth brush and scrub for Throttle body inside and out. You can put a pressure gauge on the test port of the fuel rail to check for proper fuel pressure. With the key turned on and the fuel pump primed, you should have 31 PSI. This will tell you if your fuel pump is good. If that checks good pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator. The PSI gauge should jump up to 38-39 PSI. This will tell you that your regulator is good. Check for leaks at your injector "O" rings. Run a bottle of fuel system cleaner through it if you haven't done this in awhile.

if you live in the snowbelt, they use a different gas in the winter. it has an anitfreeze in it, so the mileage goes to crap.

it'll get better in the spring.

another thing to check is your air filter.
