I recently purchased a 1988 cherokee pioneer with the big gas gauge, and when the car is off the gas gauge says full when i turn the key over it goes to about where 3 o' clock would be if it was a clock. I have tried to trouble shoot it a few times and looked at other forums and still haven't came up with anything the rest of the cluster works fine its just that gauge.

Check for correct voltage going into the level sensor. Chances are that the contacts in the tank on the pump assy. are dirty.
