Default cat converter/new exhaust

hey guys,
i hear rumbling from underneath my xj and i think i have narrowed it down to my cat converter. i am new to jeeps and want to replace it along with a new exhaust since the previous owner hit a few rocks and the tubes are pinched a little. so my question is:

1. what am i looking for in a cat converter? what are the specs for a 96 xj 2 dr and how hard is it to install myself if i have whatever tool i need to do the job

2. if i want to replace the exhaust system...what am i looking for there? i am also thinking of getting a nice muffler for a deep bad *** rumble sound...whats the best and cheapest?

I am a college student so money is tight...any help is appreciated!

if money is tight it will not be easy to replace the entire system,I would look at quadratec for what they have and check your local muffler shop, cost is not cheap, anywhere from $400-600

Might want to do what I plan.

Buy the cat and the muffler where you want. Than have a muffler shop do the install.

I was quoted $600 to have a complete system redone (from manifold back, cat and muffler). But if I buy the muffler and cat it will only cost $200 for the install an all custom bent pipe..

the biggest thing is that i want to do it myself. i have a shop that i can go to that has all the tools i would ever need to do anything to my jeep and they charge 3 bucks an hour for a non lift bay and 4 bucks for a lift bay...

Ask me again in a couple days, when I've calmed down from my horrid experience doing exactly this on my '92. Right now, I'd just swear a lot and tell you to take it to a shop and have the muffler monkeys do their bodge job to it. I'm doing full replacement with OEM and aftermarket upgrades, and absolutely nothing has gone well. Rust is a real *****.

Good converter about $225 installed. Mufflers anywhere from $35-75 installed.

Don't cheap out or you will be doing this again in a year or two.

hit up summitracing.com.

i dont remember how much cats are there, prolly around $100?? maybe less, idk, i could prolly use a new one but im not concerned about it. im also looking to open up my exhaust a little bit, dynomax has a muffler/catback for $142 plus a $75 rebate if you buy it before the 30th of this month (i think).

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-17340/

ps, im a college kid too, and for a new exhaust this is prolly the cheapest you'll find, just make sure to get that rebate in so its worth it. good luck man.

pss, whoever said rust is a ***** is 100% right, as everyone here will agree. soak any bolts/nuts/whatever in pb plaster a few days or even a week before you start taking stuff apart, you'll save a lot of bolts.

Go here (http://www.jeep.com/en/owners/ ) and enter your last 8 from your vin in the bar in the bottom left to see if you have a recall on your cat. If so, you'll get a stocker for free. no it isn't high flow, but you said you were a poor college student right?
