Default Gas gauge works part-time.

Obviously my 98 thinks its not too important I know how much gas I have left. It works sometimes and the other times itll stay down at E and the gas lite will come on. I know its not empty. Where should I start with this? All other gauges work fine.

Check the fuel level sender's resistance at the connector back @ the gas tank next time it acts up.
On an 88 You should have roughly 90 ohms with a full tank, and near zero when empty.
half-tank should be about 45 ohms, etc. (later models work in opposite fashion)

Watched it a little closer on my way home. Was on e with the light on till about half way home...then bounced around a qtr till it finally went to half a tank...which is what it should be. How hard is it to replace the sending unit

You will have to drop the tank. Wait until you know that you hardly have any gas in it before you try or you may be covered in gas.

On a 98 the gauge will read zero when the resistance goes high...like if the connector comes unplugged or is dirty or loose. Might check and clean before dropping the tank.

That's what it does. It'll wobble then shoot to empty peg and the gas light comes on
