Gas leaks can be extremely small and not always visible by naked eye. Take it to a shop and have them smoke test the fuel system

Checked for a cracked exhaust manifold. That tends to give off a gas-like smell

+1 to this. Back in my days as a Little Noobling (five months ago - now I'm a Big Noob!) I thought my exhaust manifold was actually fuel.

I had the same issue. It was my #1 injector; had a small leak just below the connector. There is a small hole in the plastic, and you can see metal body of the injector. Anyhow, it wasn't noticeable without the engine running. I only noticed it when I found a disconnected vacuum hose.

Look and Look till you find it. It's important to get it sorted out.
