fyi: Keyless Entry Fob Fix
I've seen a few post on this topic and thought I'd share:
96 4x4 XJ that had factory keyless. Bought it and had no fobs. Dealer wanted $275 for one fob and programming. Took a chance and ordered this: http://www.keylessride.com/order/quo...&frid=92CE1C2A
Some post and even the keylessride representative said I'd probably have to go to the dealer to have it programmed. Figured $55 for the fob and $50 programming was still a cheaper way to go. Got it in the mail today and used the programming instructions that came with it (which was a surprise since the rep said dealer had to do it), and within 20 seconds, I now have a working keyless entry system. $55.99 (fob, tax, shipping)
Granted you need to be within 35 feet or so, but that's all I need anyway.

What? Do the instructions include doing something in the Jeep itself to get it to recognize it? Or is this like the TV-B-Gone for breaking into cars?
Also 35 feet is great... my OEM one gets like 10 feet and i have to hold the button down and be facing the Jeep

I have the old IR style fob for my 95ZJ, it just flat out sucks! Sometimes it won't even work when standing right next to the Jeep and pointing the fob at the reciever.

My '96 has factory keyless, but the fob was broke in half and barely worked. My fix? Got a and installed it myself. Now I have a better keyless entry system plus remote engine start and alarm with not 10 foot range, not 35 foot range, but 3,000 foot range (provided there are not obstacles in the way).

The provided instructions were pretty straightforward. Open driver door and rotate ignition to "on" without starting up. Leave driver driver open anad manually push lock button to "lock". Point fob to receiver and hold down "unlock" for 5 seconds. When doors locks activate, release fob button, rotate ignition key back off and then on and back off within 20 seconds. That's it.
I'm sure there are better systems,...I just didn't care about any extras, etc.
onlyinajeep726: Have you ever stopped by the 4x4/junk yard place on Hwy 49 near Harrisburg? (Be on the right if you were driving out of Charlotte, located across the RR tracks)

Naw, I haven't. To be honest, I didn't know there was one there. I go to Harrisburg all the time though. Where is it exactly?

I know it's got "junk" vehicles out there but not sure if it's technically a junk yard. If you were to come off 485 and get on Hwy 49 towards Asheboro, go through Harrisburg. The RR Tracks kind of bypass Harrisburg and then come back to become parallel to Hwy 49. When that happens look to the right and it's a old crappy looking building on the right (fairly large one story, metal) It sits roughly 100 feet on the other side of the RR tracks. Can't be but a few miles from Harrisburg and I don't recall a name for the building.
The reason it's caught my eye is that most of the time there are a few "rock crawlers" out there, nothing fancy. I haven't stopped in yet, but figure they might have parts, etc. The cut down vehicles I've seen out there don't appear to be road legal, just for taking to extreme trail rides.
If you happen to stop there in the next few weeks, let me know what they do/are. I drive by about twice a month.
btw: Foil's recycling pays cash for your scrap metal parts. It's just further down on the right. I took a large bucket of stuff by since it was on my way and got $24. Better than nothing.
