Default Fuel tank strap

Fuel tank strap broke on 2000 Cherokee. It is on passenger side and I can break loose the nut. I could just unhook the bolt that hangs form vehicle but on the passenger side there is a heat shield between tail pipe and gas tank and it is attached to that bolt. How important is it that the shield is attached to the bolt that holds the strap up tight to the tank? It is attached to the frame also and I could just cut the small piece off that attaches to that bolt.
