Fuel pump, What to replace while tank is down?
2000 185k
What brand pump should I look at?
Is the check valve in the pump?
What else should I replace while the tank is down?
Is it common for sending units to go bad?
Is my filter in tank?
Is my regulator in tank?
Any gaskets or seals I should order?
And what are my options for replacing the tank straps?
(^ I am assuming the are rusted and will break removing them)
On to the explanation for those who wonder why I assume its the pump.
I noticed on starts my xj will not start right away.
Unless I let the pump prime. (check valve)
After a long abusing day of wheeling yesterday now while running usually at idle - low rpm range, I will randomly stall (rarely).
Only thing I have not touched on this Jeep is the fuel system.
185k, I am going to make a guess I should go ahead and replace the pump.
At key on it will hold 45psi for a short time then slowly bleed down.
Injector seals are new.
Also thought I should mention I could not find any direct answers while searching. So I added a lot of tags for future searchers.
I just want to do everything I can. I cannot afford to loose another job because of this Jeep and I need it to be top shape.
Thanks!

- Bosch or Carter only. I put CARTER Part # P75040M in my '98, but it's the same for your 2000.
- Yes, it is in the Fuel Pump Module.
- Consider replacing your rollover valve line. This is a steel line that goes from a little valve on the tank to your vapor canister mounted above/adjacent to your rear axle. Replace this with 5/8" fuel rated hose if it is rusted, as I have done here--see the black hose to the left of the module.

- Yes, on 97+ models it is. There was a recall for it in 1997, even though later models were affected. Mostly 97-98 models though.
- Yes. It attaches to the business end of the fuel pump.
- Yes, also in the module.
- I know that the Carter part # I listed above comes with a new ring for the pump module, so nothing else should be needed.
- Easy...most parts stores will have them. It's the J-hooks that are a little harder to find. You could get them from a dealer. NAPA shows them in the picture on their website with the straps, but I've heard they didn't come with them. I was able to reuse mine and didn't need to worry about this. You could easily fab something up though.
Other notes....make sure to have a 14mm ratcheting wrench, in the event that you can crack your bolts loose. You will hate life if you do not have one.

Perfect. Well done. The only thing I have to add is be VERY careful installing and handling the module. The float arm on the sending unit bends easily, and will give you funky readings on your gauge if you bend, whack, or breathe on it wrong, LOL. Also, make sure you clean everything really well before you take the old unit out, lots of crap, dirt, mud and grime can end up where the ring mounts. Best to keep that out of yer tank!!!
