Default fuel pump suckin air?

Today is my first day as a member so bear with me.
My kid just bought a '95 Cherokee with the 4.0 h.o. It had been sitting for over a year and he was really pleased when she roared to life. After a new radiator, water pump, belt, and fuel filter it rolls down the road as good as new, except, when it has less than a 1/4 tank of gas. If he accelerates kinda hard it will choke and stall. I wanna believe that there is some kind of problem with th fuel pump sucking air. The gas guage dips way down and the "low fuel" light comes on jsut before it stalls.
Is this even possible or am I reachin for straws?
Some of the aftermarket fuel pumps I have found have a rubber hose that extends to the pickup screen at the bottom of the pump and I'm thinking that, because it has been sitting, that hose may have degraded to where it's allowing air into the fuel system once the gas rushes to the back of the tank.
I really don't want to drop the tank if I don't have to, so I'm asking if this is something that happens to Cherokees of this vintage?

You're on the right track. There is a hose in the tank like you describe.

You don't have to drop the tank to do the fuel pump

You do if it's a later model Cherokee.

i had the same problem with my 89... turns out the sock filter had fallen off the bottom of the pump into the tank and was not reaching deep enough into the fuel

Just a follow-up.
Pulled the fuel pump and found the same thing that had happened to Red Jeep. The strainer screen had came off the hose. I can't tell if the hose had crumbled or if it had just came off. The hose was degraded to where it was sticky and soft and crumbly.
Autozone had the repair parts and I was able to shine a flashlight inside the tank and removed a couple other pieces of the degraded hose.
Thanks guys for the help!!
