So, I have the classic fuel pump regulator problem on an '01 xj - hard start, prime the pump once or twice and it starts right up. Will check to make sure it's not heat evap at the injectors but pretty damn sure it's the regulator in the pump.

? is: Does anyone know if the "APE" brand pump #APE A6027A is any good? I've been told and have read on here that one should stay away from the AIRTEK brand pump. Any experience with an APE?

OR does anyone know of a source for the Bosch (preferred) part that won't run me $190!!!??? I really can't afford that right now.

 

I have the same problem in my '00. Positive it is the check valve. You can buy a new check valve for about $85. Thing is you still have to drop the tank. As OCD as I am I can't just do all that for a check valve. But at this point it is kinda of a waste to replace the whole pump. That I then I have to buy new straps, replace some fuel lines, etc, just cause I am there. Fortunately it has not been a real issue. So I have been saving up. Not that I know any better but most people say go Bosch.

 

$190 for a fuel pump that will probably last another 15 years ain't that bad.

 

yeah 190 ain't that bad if you got an extra 190 layin' around... times are tight.

You really don't have to buy new straps or fuel lines at all. unless the lines are mushy they will be just fine and unless you screw up the bolts on the straps those straps are meant to be servicable. You will run into problems with the heat shield by the exhaust. It's best to cut a notch in the mounting hole in the heat shield so you don't have to release the whole thing. You usually have to remove your hitch to release totally. If you cut out a notch in the mounting hole you can just bend it out of your way then bend it back when remounting and add a couple of washers so it doesn't rattle.

 

I would go with fuel pump replacement either to ensure everything there will work as new.

Obviously the pump needs replaced. That's not even in question. Some guy was talking about swapping out everything involved. You don't have to and still, who cares? Not the point of my thread.

Has anyone had any luck with other brands of fuel pump other than Bosch (and for an extended amt. of time.)?

You can buy just the fuel pump (not the fuel pump and housing) and it'll save you about 50% of the price. The catch is you'll have to take apart the old housing/sending unit to remove the pump/install a new one. I haven't done it on the Cherokee yet but did exactly this when I had to go to a higher rated pump on the vette after the heads/cam install. It's really not that bad. thanks for all the links to the pumps - the pump isn't what's bad. THE PRESSURE REGULATOR IS THE PROBLEM. What good would a pump by itself do if the regulator has gone out? Think about it.

Can't locate my maintenance record on my PC right now, but I have about 5,000 miles on it and it was installed 3/19/2012 - at least, that's the date on this photo of my mod to install it through a hatch cut in the cargo bay floor.
