1st off I searched the forum for this and didnt find it so if anyone knows where a previous post is I will gladly delete this on.
My question: Is it possible to have the fuel pump make noise ( very low sound ) while still being bad?
I have next to no pressure at the fuel rail schrader valve. If I use starting fluid in the air intake it will start and idel for as long as there is fluid flowing or until I pull on the throttle linkage.
It was causing some issues with running rough and even got hot a bit.
I am thinking the fuel pump is gone but I can still hear it trying to work when the key is turned on, just no pressure.
Any ideas before I go ripping the tank out?

rip the tank out. it's possible that the "filter" screens that are attached to the pump are clogged. Pump might still try to run but the clogged screens are preventing the fuel from flowing.

Yup, if feeding the intake allows the engine to run, you have confirmed a fuel delivery problem. And all of it is inside the tank on 97 and newer.
I'd highly recommend buying a BOSCH fuel pump assembly if/when you dig in. Well worth the extra money.

I bought a bosch pump here on amazon:
At $230 it was about $100 cheaper than anywhere else if you end u deciding you need one.

It actually went up to $250, but that still is an excellent price for a Bosch fuel pump assembly!
Not likely to be beaten at a bricks and mortar parts store.

Same problem on mine after sitting for 4 years with cracked head put new pump on hasn't missed a lick since. If you have low to no pressure at schrader valve. Change pump don't mess with strainer. The money spent is worth more than changing the pump twice

[QUOTE=rosenhanclan;1391832]Is it possible that the low fuel pressure could make the engine get hot? I remember something about a lean running engine generating more heat.[/QUOTE
Not likely. Concentrate on getting your fuel pressure squared around.
You may have two issues here.
