Looking at 4.0 from the front, which is the fuel return line- the one closer to the radiator?

is you regulator by the front of the motor ,fuel is pumped thru the rail to the regulator which holds back fuel and gives the pump time to create fuel pressure b4 letting what ever the motor does not require to return to the tank, so if yours is by the front of the motor yes that is return

 

So the regulator will be on the side of the return?

Thanks. Both the picture and link help. I checked a haynes manual and it had nothing. I even checked alldata and samething- and real answer
...and Programbo, I don't have time to sleep. Ill sleep when I'm dead
