Default Fuel gauge and pump not working 98 xj

I have a 98 xj that has been sitting sence 2017. I finally decided to get around to working on it. Everything worked fine when I parked it. Today I put a new battery in it and some fresh gas went to start it and there is no fuel getting to the injector rail. I Also noticed that my fuel gauge is reading empty. I checked all the fuses and swapped relays and still nothing. I seem to be getting power to the relay box. Every thing else seems to be working just not the fuel pump. Any advice on what to check or look for. I assume it's a power or ground problem I cant imagine the pump and sending unit would just stop working at the same time.

from what I can tell all the wires look good. I tried testing power at the plugin at the tank. The green and white wire I believe is power. I'm not sure if I had a bad ground or if the motor needs to be cranking to show power ( I only had the key on) but I wasn't getting anything. I think I'll try running a good ground from the battery tomorrow to eliminate that possibility. I find it odd that the fuel pump and gauge would just stop working after sitting. I have no problem buying a new pump I just want to eliminate all the possibilites before I drop the tank.

Check if you have power arriving at the pump as well as a good ground.
I dont think your fuel pump relay would be affected by not being active for 4 years; you can try jumping is on the relay socket,
The fuel level sending is done from within the pump itself; I dont know if you would have to have a working pump to have accurate fuel level indication, or that it would be two separate things. Maybe someone can chime in on that.
Your gauges should come on with key in the run position, including the fuel gauge

Well mine on a 98 is connected meaning the pump and guage. My gauge would show a 1/4 tank when full then shoot up to full and back down to empty etc. Shortly after that the thing would only go 5mph to get back home and died.

ok I ran a jumper wire from the battery to confirm I had a good ground. I checked the green wire on the plug and had 12v for a few seconds when the key is turned on and had 12v the whole time while its cranking. I guess it's the fuel pump. I went ahead and pulled it out my new pump should be in at the parts house in a few hours. I went ahead and dropped the tank it gave me a chance to get all the old fuel out.

well it was the pump. I replaced it and it fired right up. It worked out for the best it had over a half tank of 4 year old gas so I was able to dump it and get some fresh stuff in it.
