fuel gauge always reads emppty
i have a 96 jeep cherokee classic and i recently dropped a new fuel pump assembly thats for a 97 jeep and now it doesnt read the fuel level.i seen in the fuel pump harness pinpoints arent matching up as well and i did a circuit test on the wires from the female connector and it all has power .could it be that the fuel level from the pump itself isnt cpnnecting ?

So the fuel pump actually runs the jeep, just no fuel level ? you can take it out and ohms test the sending part and see if it works, It is my understanding that 96' is a one off sending unit ohms resistance wise like 95' and 94'. I had helped a friend figure out his 95' sending unit problem and ran across this info but have no real hands on with a 96'. Wiring diagram might be useful to match up fuel sending part of the connector.
The 96 and 97 are wired differently from what i have found. There was no followup so i would hold off on messing with it until someone else that knows exactly whats going on chimes in. See post #16.

The 1996 xj sending unit, pump, and regulator are all in one unit in the tank.
