so what is happening is while accelerating it is lurching is the best I can describe it. it feels like it is loosing fuel then getting it back over and over.
lurching forward then loosing power then full power again then the same thing over and over again. it idles fine and revs in neutral, seems to just be under a load. and this morning went to the gas station and it ran fine.

any ideas.

 

sounds like you had/have some water in the gas tank, which is why it happened when you were low on fuel and went away when you filled it. It'll work itself out with a few fill-ups i wouldn't worry too much about it. Just keep the tank from getting low enough for the pump to suck up straight water

 

it had over half a tank of gas when this happened.

haven't drove it again. I will soon. I hope your right. Im tired of fixing things. I wanna do the fun stuff like lift and tires. Ive been working on it for 3 weeks. had to start all over with a new xj the one in my avatar died. so I have another just like it but stock.

 

OK here is the new update.

it is now not just loosing and gaining power it is sputtering and popping and running like crap. after fighting through that for 10-20 seconds it will make to 3000 rpms and will run out with full power.

did a pressure test on the fuel rail and it was about 19psi.
took the fuel filter off and some rusty brown colored fuel followed by black fuel drained out. I could easily blow through it after though.

drove it again and it was slightly better, it didn't take as long to get through the sputtering. ran normal at about 2200-2500rpm

so that is the new update.
what do yall think?
bad fuel pump?
tons of crap in the tank?
or something else?

 

fuel pressure was done with xj running and 19 pound fuel pump time

is 19 pounds normal? I thought it was supposed to be 30 pounds.
