This post is so I can find the links to FSMs and other useful manuals to help you fix your XJ ( I will edit them in, take me a couple of go's)
(the late great) cruiser54 website
Technical Manuals | cruiser54
################################################## ################################################## ###################
links to my Google Drive which has specific manuals for '96 models
(you can free download these as they are "public access" on my own personal Google Drive). I own 3 x '96 models)
OBD1 Diagnostic manual. This is superb to help with OBD1 OR 2 engines diagnostics. Ignore DRB1 test tool references. A multimeter is needed
1995 Jeep Cherokee XJ diagnostic Powertrain manual.pdf - Google Drive
1996 FSM (essential, should be on your phone as well)
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ku7...ew?usp=sharing
1994-96 Factory Parts Manual (more useful than you can imagine)
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jRd...ew?usp=sharing
1996 Factory Drivers Handbook A5 size. Came with vehicle, you need it!
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yZL...ew?usp=sharing
################################################## ################################################## #######
Many relevant XJ FSM and other manuals, (link courtesy of Bruce, who PMd this link)
XJ JEEPS | 1984 - 2001 Jeep Cherokees

The reason I always advise people to download the relevant manuals is that is how I was trained to repair equipment when I was a technician.
That is what they are written for. In respect of electrical issues, they are essential, unless you can get someone else to tell you, which is not easy
I have qualifications and experience in electronics and automotive electrics, and have been working on vehicles over 50yrs. I do all my own work.
(A long time ago, I worked for Cummins Diesel, including time in their engine rebuild facility, didn't spot many manuals there,,,,but there should have been !)
Working on vehicles is not my profession, more like a hobby.
I only know what I know, if I haven't come across it before, I have to "waste time" studying the manual
Back in the day FSM stood for "Feild Service Manual" and I had a huge heavy box full in my Service vehicle, wernt no mobiles phones back in the day bras

Most of the links on Cruiser's tech manual page no longer work. The site that hosted them throws a 502 error (bad gateway).
Since we're posting links, here are 2 more. There is some duplication across them all but one can get a fairly complete library for personal use.
Great Lakes XJ on the Wayback Machine. (tested a few download).
https://web.archive.org/web/20110706....com/tech.html
Direct to Archive.Org. You can add the specific year if you like to narrow down the search.

ComancheClub.com kind of mirrored Cruiser54's site. I haven't looked lately and I don't know how complete it is but a lot of the info is over there. There is a Cruiser54 specific sub forum with content.
