i have jeep j10 and it has dana 44s front and rear and a amc 304 v8!
so i have been reading the 304 v8 will bolt up to the aw4 trans so i am planning on bolting the 304 to the aw4 and hook up switch to control the trans. Then i plan on taking the dana 44s cut off all the mounts weld new ones on and preping and paint the axles then install them on my xj. but my question is when i go to put the 304 in should i take all the wiring and computer out of the j10 and put it in my xj or could i some how get the engine running with the xjs wiring and computer? the only reason i ask is the j10 has no power inside and my xj is power everything, and i dont know if the wiring for all power windows and stuff go into the computer? if anyone could help me that would be great

uuhh... if your 304 is has a carb which i think it does then there really isnt going to be much wiring around it... just your basic sensors and your wire from the ignition to the distributor... i would leave the computer alone in the XJ and as long as the batterys hooked up it should be good... more then likely though your always gonna have a check engine light on since your computers looking for sensors that you wont have... also google motor mounts... i found some already made for a 350 swap in a XJ... $150 bucks but may make things easier... also im not positive but i thought the front axle on the J10's were Pass side diffs??? goodluck with this since its not going to be something thats easy and can be ready to drive a few days later... unless you own trick my truck

uummm maybe try and use the one from the j10... and the tranny... all of it... thats what i would do... from what i understand the AW4 isnt a strong tranny... the AX-15 is really the only one that can hold the power of a V8 and thats if the V8 is small and stock... so if i were you i would swap it all over... or just build the j10...
I have a past history with FSJs if you want the 304 but not the 3 speed try finding a grand wag and use its Chrysler TF727 3 speed auto, its very strong, takes any power you can throw at it as it also came behind early hemi motors.
B and M makes a nice shift kit for it. I had a worked 360 with a 727 shift kit and blew up more u joints then I care to talk about.
As for the t-case. Not sure what came in the J Trucks, but I would try and find a Dana 300, its gear driven, strong enough for the 304 and its pass side drop. They were found in CJ with the same motor and trans combo I talked about so should bolt right in.
Good luck, that would make one nasty XJ.
Cooling your 304 might be an issue. but that shouldn't be to bad to figure out.

your right 60grit and Advanced or Novac both make conversions.
I was talking about the 300 to the TF727. they came connected in early CJs.
Personally I wouldn't put an AW4 behind his 304, or any other mild V8.
