how did you check them, jack up the tire and put a bar under it then have someone lift up on it while you watch the ball joints, you will see any play if there bad.

Put a bar under what
Thanks for all the help guys. I appreciate that you actually tried to identify the problem instead of flaming and acting cool.
Well, I picked it up for $600 and I'm not wanting to dump a whole lot of cash into this as I'm only driving it until I'm done with school in a few months and can afford something new, then I'll probably turn this into a build.
On a tight budget, what would you check/replace first? I feel like if it were ball joints the steering would be fairly loose and it is not (but I am coming for a 90 F250 Diesel). I'll know more when I get my lift back and can do some wiggling. I'm picking up some new used tires for it tomorrow and will swap those out and see how it goes from there. Like I said, nothing looked terrible traction bar wise.

jack up the front axle tell the tires are off the ground a small amount. slide something under the tire and pull up on it towards the hood. watch the ball joints as someone is moving the bar up and down. if the ball joints are bad you will see it.

no, thats not flexing anything within the joint really. you're looking for action from up to down with just the tire. generally, up and down wiggle is ball joints and left to right wiggle is something steering component related.

An alignment would be a great start. Most shops won't even think to do an alignment if your ball joints are bad. So you could take it in for an alignment, and they'll probably be able to tell you what kind of shape they are in.
And as far as motor mounts, I would think that any sort of wobble/vibration they would cause would simply get worse as you get going faster. I wouldn't think it would go away once you reach a certain speed. But hey, I could be wrong, it just makes sense in my head.

i would think so...
anyway, after further inspection..
looking at a drivers side ball joints and hub bearing. none were in great shape so im gonna do all joints and both bearings while i've got the tools out. throwing tires on this weekend and then an alignment, hopefully she'll be set.
any tips or things to watch out for when replacing ball joints or bearings on these babys?
