Front and rear diff ID Please Help!
I hate to be that guy who doesnt do enough research but i cant figure out which front axle i have have. I have been looking around at other threads and im fairly certain that my rear (painted green in pics) is a Chrysler 8.25 please correct me if im wrong. The front axle i am not sure of. Its definitely a DANA. I can read DANA on the diff cover. I think its a DANA 35? anyone know for sure? please educate me i have no idea, my own research only took me so far due to my ignorance.

Ok thanks for the info! any chance the front could be a DANA 35? I say this because this was a 2wd converted to 4wd. the previous owner said he picked up the front axle at a JY. As far as the green paint goes... im not exactly Picasso lol. Thanks again.

Nope. The D35 was rear only and completely different from the front. The only front axle used in the XJ from the factory was the D30. Anything else has been fabricated.

A stronger upgrade would be a Ford 8.8, but it will take a lot more time and fabrication to make it work.

What year is the Jeep? There were two different versions of the C8.25, one a 27 spline, and one a 29 spline. The more desirable of the two is the 29 spline and were in the '97ish-'01 XJ's. If you're going to put time or money (or a locker) in it, you'll want the 29 spline axle. It all depends on how you'll use it, but the C8.25 is plenty strong up to a 35 inch tire, and will be fine with a locker.
A stronger upgrade would be a Ford 8.8, but it will take a lot more time and fabrication to make it work.
