ok my 84 makes a POP POP POP POP when under a load or turning in 4x4 slowly but if im in 4hi and romp on it it goes pop pop pop pop pop pop pop pop and if i let off it goes pop pop pop pop pop pop pop pop and will quit when im just lightly driving any ideas, i should say when you are in 4hi it makes a rapid ticking sound when you romp on it or let off and its coming from the front, the tcase chain if tight and all my u joints are good i think, if you can feel any play in them are the bad?? but in 2wd its perfect.
I don't know about t-cases but could the chain be too tight? I know when I worked on my bike as a kid if the chain was too tight it would do about the same. Completly differant application but just a tought.

well if your in 4X4 are you feeling it fight back and pop? thats normal: the rotation of the front wheels fighting eachother. Is your xj lifted? mines a 3" lift with knobby 31's. if i turn hard it will pop: the effect of the inside edge of my tread ***** hitting the coils

ya i checked the track bars and one was loose witch i new once tight dident make a diff on the front end? and its a loud pop at the left wheel and it seems the right wheel spins allot more that the left witch thats where i am hearing the sound
Sounds to me like either a bad u-joint on the driveshaft, loose steering component, or just your typical 4x4 pop, which all trucks do in 4x4 on solid pavement. Check the u-joints by putting the truck in neutral, and t-case, with parking brake on, and moving the driveshaft by hand. if it feels sloppy, then your u-joints are bad. check steering by crawling under and having a buddy steer while looking for somethign that looks loose. or you could check ball joints and tie rods by jacking up front end of the rig, try moving tire left and right, or up and down. if up and down has play, it's the ball joints. if left-right, tie rods. hope that helps ya!
ehhhhhhhhh... if you dont know anyone thats a mechanic and cant get the advice on here (which is rare) you may want to bite the big one and do a premptive strike and take it in. if it would have been a simple fix and you shread a bunch of parts because of it, it would blow! Im talking pretty vague cuz we dont know whats up. you could get a mechanics opinion also and repost with the info you get and I almost guarantee we could help then
