ehhhhhhhhh... if you dont know anyone thats a mechanic and cant get the advice on here (which is rare) you may want to bite the big one and do a premptive strike and take it in. if it would have been a simple fix and you shread a bunch of parts because of it, it would blow! Im talking pretty vague cuz we dont know whats up. you could get a mechanics opinion also and repost with the info you get and I almost guarantee we could help then
Haha, that's the last thing anyone on THIS site would do. "take it in" is a very bad three letter phrase here....
Mine did that and it was one of the front axle u joints, crawled under her and grabbed each one, check for movement in any direction. Pulled my axle took it and a new ball joint to jeep, 100.00 later they pressed on the new u joint, good as new. Buy a press if you plan on keeping your jeep, you can use it for ball joints, u joints and will pay for itself after the first use.

i would bet on a bad axle ujoint in the front as well. Very easy to check. Get down in front of the jeep and grab ahold of the axle joint near the wheel. If you can rotate it or shift it side to side by hand in any way, the joint is bad and needs to be replaced. There should be no movement in the joint at all.
Sounds like a bad u-joint to me. Not a driveshaft U-joint, but one at the axle. Crank you wheels all the way to one side, and look in behind the wheel. If you don't have a CV Joint with a rubber boot, than you have a u-joint. If it is not nice and tight, it will make that sound.
Another thought. Do you have a vacuum operated central axle disconnect? I believe it is on the drivers side of the axle housing. Check the tube between the differential and the wheel. If there is something bolted on, with a vacuum line going to it, let me know, I have an easy fix.

Remove the front diff cover and make sure everything is ok in there. I had a very similar problem where I would get a popping noise while under load in 4wd and it turned out I had broken my frond end spider gears.
