You'll have to replace the oil pan gasket if you damage it while removing the pan. The pan has to come off to get the timing chain cover off. The timing chain cover has to come off in order to replace the seal.

why are you calling it premature failure? after thousands of miles these are a high fail part.....on all engines ever built by any manufacturer. So yeah, get it fixed, it'll save you a spot on the driveway! While you are in there, think about doing the rear main seal, and maybe your oil pump. Just get it all done at one time and you are ready to roll again

well im calling it premature b/c the engine only has about 15-20,000 miles on it, i looked closely at the oil pan there is a seal on the oil pan itself where the oil is seeping from so im gonna go ahead and replace that but any ideas how much this will cost. To my understanding the mechanic will have to remove the entire engine partially?

well i went on saturday to the local jeep dealer here in portland. and had a check done on it and had them list out the problems, and the price to fix it. from there i can have my mechanic buddie teach me how to fix what needs fixing. "i hope" but for the rear main seal, and the oil pan gasket. they priced it out at $655.00 im not sure how different that would be from the front, because as i said im just learning myself. but that should give you a rough idea or what a dealer will charge.

What was the list they said of what needed to be repaired?

its not hard at all, maybe 3-5 hrs depending how slow and good you are. it cost me to get a 1 piece pan and rear main cost me at napa 45 bucks. i am goning to do my oil pump too so i can knock that whole thing out at 1 time. Dont spend the 655+ bucks when u can do it ur self for under 100 with oil and new filter haha. Good luck keep us updated.
