Default Front end (Dana 30) diff. carrier bearing help, Please!

So I need to replce my carrier bearings in my front dana 30 but, my main question is can I just replace the bearings and not buy new shims an all that..? and if so can I just take the bearing off an leave the shims on then replace the old one with the new one and not have to re-shim it up? Also, is less than an 1/8th of an inch play too much in my hub?

Yes, you should be able to replace just the bearings and not have to change the shim arrangement.

The backlash needs to be reset. No two bearings are alike.

A dial gauge, which tells you backlash. you should be able to in normal cases put the new bearings on, drop it in, torque it down and be fine. How you test backlash is you set the ring gear all the way foward so its in full contact with the pinion. set the dial gauge to a random number and pull the ring gear in the opposite direction until it hits the pinion again. if its more than 8thousands you need to adjust, if its less than about 3 to 4 thousands your need to adjust, so between 4 and 7 is ideal backlash for regular road travel.

I don't have one of those though or know where to get one so, i'm gunna run a pattern and see if it looks like the pinion is running as deep as it was before (because you can see the wore area)..i'm hoping for the best! Also, 2 more questions guys...1. what is the rubbery stuff (almost like permatex form-a-gasket) for in front of each inner axle oil seal? and 2. When reinstalling my diff. is the best way to do it if you don't have a diff. spreader use a rubber/soft faced mallet to knock it back in? I mean I know you start it easy and get both sides started the same and then go from there.

The reason I had to do this was because I wrecked my Jeep and when reinstalling the axle shafts today we noticed that the passenger side didn't want to go back in like it was binding..my whole axle housing is warped/crooked!
