Default Front diff make noise when turning in 4wh/lo

Today was the first day i drove my xj after aquiring it in sept. It had no engine, exh, and missing drive shafts. I installed the engine, shafts and a used 3in lift and some 31's. I put the transfer in 4-high,turned the wheels a slight bit, went to give it some gas, got a real un-explainable noise from the right front. This thing was sitting wih no-engine for about a year or so, the brakes are all rusted, soi was also chalking up the noise as binding from rust. This is my first 4x4, let alone a jeep product. On another note, can ball joints be done in the driveway or is that shop stuff?

command-trac or selec-trac? command-trac must not be used on dry pavement.

Ball joints will run you about $70 for the parts, and about 6 hours for both sides in labor at a shop. Go to autozone and rent a ball joint press and do it yourself. It took me about 7 hours for both sides, upper and lower. It was my first time. It is not a hard job at all, just time consuming.
