Hi all, I picked up a 1994 Cherokee Sport back in May. I've been working on it over the summer/fall and am lovin' it! (both working on it and wheeling)
Surfing led me to this site; liked the atmosphere, so signed up. So far I have put on a 4" TeraFlex lift, 31" ATs, Cust. 4x4 Fab rear bumper, tire carrier, & Rock Sliders.
Next up I am planning on a decent front bumper and winch. I was thinking about Cust. 4x4 Fab for that too. (Know a few people who have their products and very happy with them) So far the've worked great for me.
The winch I was considering is the Warn 8000.
I would like to hear any thoughts or suggestions y'all may have the subject of bumpers and winches...

First Hello and welcome to CF. The ideas about the front bumper is a good one. Winch is OK but you can do as well with a cheaper winch unless you plan to winch everyday the less expensive ones work as well but may be a bit slower. I looked at several and compared specifications before deciding which to get. You may want to do the same. Warn is good but consider the others too.

Thx for the welcome BlueXJ. I will look around.
I guess part of the question I have is an 8000 lb winch enough? You have a 12,000 lb; a bit over 3 times GVW. Is that to make less work on the winch and therefore increase lift span?
I have to admit I really don't know how to determine how much pull is really required.

as for the weight your winch can pull, thats usually when the cord is fully out.... so if your only using 10 feet of rope you can only pull have of the 8000 lbs. you can also use a pulley and pull double the weight...

Just think a comparison will not hurt and if he still chooses Warn then at least he will be better informed about winches.

I told him the warn was a good winch. That is not in question. My buddy had a warn on his CJ7 and when winching up a hill his would get hot enough to fry eggs on but mine would stay cool enough that you can hold your hand on it. Warn would pull faster than mine but did get pretty hot.

Ramsey... a buddy has one and got a new electric. And at the price he is asking I can't refuse. The Warn can go on my trailer and I offically get out of the 'do I need another winch' market.

IMO - Any Warn, MileMarker or Ramsey in the 8k or above will work well for you
. I wouldn't advise going below 8k though.
I've got Warns myself (XD9000I and 9500 Si), but haven't heard any issues with the other brands.
Hope this helps,
Kent
