So I hanging out thinking bout the jeep. What does it take to swap out a front axle. I was wondering if stearing componets needed changed. How to make long arms work how I get a long arm kit under it. Also if someone could suggest a good swap for an 86 I want to eventualy run 37s.

 

dana 60 would be the best for that tire size but you would be fine with a dana 44...... parts are also cheaper for the 44.

 

Where could I get one like thatkinda car could pull one out of. How much modification will it take to fit one in

 

well you can get both at junk yards, but probally find them on craigslist for cheaper........as far as modding it depends on what your going to do with it like running leaf springs or coils and what type of steering your going to run. the dana 44 came in early year ford broncos.....i believe 70-84 not to sure about the year......another thing to keep in mind is the lug patterns....if you get the 44 off a dodge or chevy it may be 6 of 8 lug but the dana 60 is always going to be 8 lug.

 

theres a ton of welding needing to be done to make the swap. you need a complete bracket kit. if you are going to a d60 theres no sense in doing it if you are keeping the stock shafts. 35plines are where its at. you need to figure out what bolt pattern you want to run. then you need the appropriate spindles and hubs and lockouts. you need to gear it and lock it. yes you need to figure out what you are going to do for steering.

Im sorry but if you are asking these questions you have a TON of RESEARCH to do. and I MEAN A TON.

if you do this stay away for the cast wedges.

 

the easiest and cheapest would be to grab a set of axles from a 78 or 79 ford bronco. these are a d44 front and ford 9" rear with big bearings and brakes.
they are full size (width) axles that do have the cast wedges, but for starting out, you can easily use the ford radius arms and leave the coil buckets where they are. just extend the radius arms with johnny joints, and make a new x member to bolt it up to. then you'll have basically a long arm setup that flexes like mad using the stock ford parts.

as for steering, it's really quite easy once you put your head into it.
the rear is the easiest.

if you don't want full width or the cast wedges, you can use 67-77 ford early bronco d44, but you'll need to upgrade the shafts to the larger u-jonts, but the wedges are welded on, so they're easy to remove.

personally, i have a set of the 78/79 bronco axles i'm gonna put in mine, and i already have long arms that i'm gonna replace with the longer ford radius setup just for the ease of it.

but just so you know, ford went to the TTB axle in 80, so stay away from those.

 

i got my rear dana 44 out of a 89 jeep cherokee 87-89 in like 4-5% of the cherokees jeep made had Dana 44's in the back. it is a strait bolt on and works like a charm. i picked mine up for $300

Are all the danas the same withe ex: is a Dana 60 out of a ford the same as say a dodge. Same foot print?
