My kickdown cable was frayed beyond belief..... It kept catching at the end of the conduit resulting in hard shifts....... Time to teplace now....... I looked around online and yielded no luck....... I finally found it on Jc Whitney. for $27 with shipping....... Part#52077578

 

This ought to be a sticky.... Awesome results from a 10 second procedure! Shifts are smoother and crisper and the Jeep is much more responsive.

I just adjusted mine and had a bunch of slack. I'll go out and test drive later. I'm doing a tune up on my '76 Power Wagon right now. Have to get out to the woods later and haul my tractor back in and do some work on it.

 

OK, so I didn't get a chance to test drive until I went out on my newspaper route early this morning. All I can say is WOW!!!. Big difference for me. The tranny shifted better and seemed like it had more power going up hills, even if it didn't downshift. And, because it went up the hills better (I have a lot of hills on my paper route), the engine didn't work as hard so the temp didn't go as high as normal... added bonus. Maybe it's wishful thinking but it seems like my mpg improved as well. I won't know for sure until I go fill up later and figure the mileage but by the gauge, there was a noticeable increase. I'm glad someone revived this thread, otherwise, I'd never have seen it. This is one of those basic maintenance things that I never thought about. It felt like I had a brand new transmission.

 

I just went and checked on mine and the conduit was about 1" or so out. I just got the 1999 with 152,000 miles, so it likely has never been done. Won't get to drive it until tomorrow so I will report back.

 

It will be hit or miss... mine is a '92 with 167k on it... did it with mine and the throttle cable put it back to exactly where it was... no change. Still drives like a dream though, so no biggie.

 

Just had to share. I stumbled upon this from the ask a question thread.

I did the procedure.

It appears to have removed 1/2" to 5/8" play out of the cable (99 w/ 202k). My trans was being a little funny, going in and out of lockup, and not kicking down very well and shifting out of second a lil early. It seems to have helped all these issues. Nice. Thanks for the info CF.

 

I did it. It seems that my shifts are not as smooth now. After a few days of driving I will move it back and then report back as to what felt better while driving.

 

Just did this and i noticed a smoother, faster shift. i didnt have any problems before, i just did it bc i was doin some minor stuff under the hood anyway. Defiantly recommend.

 

Just happened upon this thread. Tried this out and test drove, wow what a difference. I had like 1 1\2" of slack. I highly recommend this 10 sec. fix. Thanks

 

i did this last week, had about an inch of slack. im up 2 mpgs this week and my shifting is sooooo smooth now. much more power uphill. great thread!

 

I tried to do this the other day but my button wont budge a centimeter even when I wacked on it with a screwdriver. Tips? Is it safe to spray something on it? If so, what.
