I don't recall any springs used in the door. But I may be wrong. Do you have any pics of the spring to give us a better idea.

do both the interior and exterior door handles work properly?
Second thought...do you have manual door locks? That kind of looks like the spring for the interior door lock button.

That looks like part of your door check. The door check props the door open. There are two springs in the door check that hold the "arm" tight against a small bearing. Does your door stay open when you open it or hit you in the shins?

New door checks are like fifty bucks online. You can pull one from a pick and pull for like five bucks. Door checks from any XJ will work.

That would be why my door doesn't stay open. I was wondering why it wouldn't stay but now I know. Thanks

Can you just buy spring or is it better to get whole new part??

It's not really a serviceable part. I tried haha. That spring tension is crazy high. Plus with the spring looking as rusted as yours looks, I would think that the bearings on it are all shot as well. I would just get the part from a junk yard. Either driver or passenger front side from any XJ. Take the hinge from that the door check connects to also. It's a good chance that if your door check is broken the hinge is warped.
