Default Ford 9" and TJ 44

Alright so I got a good little set of axles for my XJ build up now I just need some advice on making them work. The 44 I believe is from a TJ. Everything looks like it would bolt up when I took the measurements for all the front mounts. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that.

The rear is a great little find I got out of the pull-a-part today. It's a Ford 9" with 31 spline shafts out of a 77 Lincoln so it has the disc brakes. Besides cutting off the old mounts and welding on new spring pads and shock mounts what other modifications would need to be made. Mainly mods for the drive shaft is what I'm worried about. Any advice is appreciated.

The dana 44 should bolt in. I'm unfamiliar with what u-joint it takes at the yoke though. Do you got the steering parts with it? What's included on the 44?

One other thing...you are damn lucky

Are you certain it's a 44? TJ's came with Dana30's up front. Rubicons came with Dana44's. If it is in fact a dana44 from a Rubicon then the u-joint will be Spicer 1350. Your XJ has 1310's. You can get a 1350/1310 u-joint but I's suggest swapping the 1350 yoke for a 1310 yoke.

If the rear is a big bearing ford 9"....Sweet! If not, you may want to find a 3rd member that is equiped with the big bearing pinion.

Ya I have everything for the steering components front the the pit man arm down. I do need a trac bar but I'm getting an adjustable one any way.

The 44 came as a spare axle when my buddy bought his jeep so I really don't no much about it other than how it stands, and my buddy said I could have it

The Axle is defiantly a 44. Upon checking the axle it has jeep characteristics of one. With 27 spline shafts and even a 5 X 4.5 bolt pattern. There were a few years that the Sahara's had a front D44 with no locker, I believe it's from one of them. In that since will I still have to change the yoke over?

I'm not to sure about the 9". I still pretty new to the 9" with all there variations. My original intention was to get an 8.8 cause I wanted disc brakes when I upgraded. But yesterday me and my buddy stumbled across the 9" in the back of a mark 5. So I figured why get the 8.8 when I can get a full 9 for the same price. Honestly the only thing I can truly tell you about the 9in so far is it supposed to have 2.50 gears according to the tag with a possible with a posi-lok and it has disc brakes. I'll have to wait a little bit to break it open in order to check out all the insides.

I plan on doing a full rebuild of both these axles with all new bearings and seals. I will probably keep the same shafts or upgrade to chromoly that I'm unsure of yet. But I will be running either 4.56 or 4.88 gears with 35's or 36's.
The rear is going to be locked with a Detroit the front will probably be an ARB or an OX not real sure yet. It's all in the planning stages and most the work probably wont start till next summer as far as putting it all together but I figured it's best to go ahead and get a jump on what needs to be done now.

Thanks for all the help guys, keep it coming

The only TJ to come with a Dana44 was the Rubicon. Sahara's came with a dana 30. Can you post a pic of the axle and the B.O.M. number off of the tube?

I can post a pic but it's sitting at home so I can't pull the axle tab. Truly it's been a while since I've messed with it.

and here's the 9in

Gotta be from a Rubi cuz like Frank said, no wrangler had a front dana 44. The sahara's sometimes came with a REAR dana 44.

Ya there is supposed to be 2 pics of the 44 and one of the 9in. I think there is something wrong with my pictures host server for displaying the second 44 pic. Honestly from my pictures you can't really tell if it's a 44 or a 30.

Are you sure it's not a HP dana 30? Is the cover square-ish but with rounded corners (30) or somewhat like a stop sign (44)?

like I said, it's my friends. I've only seen it once or twice at his house thrown in with all are spare parts. I'm pretty sure it was a 44 cause I can usually tell the difference and I even read the axle tags. If im wrong though I'll be sure to bang my head against something pretty hard for being so dumb. It's free either way so it might just end up becoming a spare if it is.

It appears to be a low pinion axle. A pic of the diff from the front would be ideal.

You said 27 spline...that means Dana30. The 44's in the Rubi's are 30 spline.

I could have just been thrown of by the fact that it's a low pinion. I'm going to call my buddy and get him to read me off the axle tab later. Either way I still got the 9in with discs and a spare 30 for parts if it's not. I know where I can get a d44 for the front just wont be so bolt in friendly. Thanks for the help guys. I'll post up the axle tag later when I get it.

So after a good laugh from me and my buddy I'm pretty well convinced that it's a 30 not a 44. Not sure how I mistook that but whatever just adds something to laugh about. Although the 9in is no laughing matter and I came out good on that so I'm happy. Just means I'll have to do the 44 the hard way but oh well just means more fab and fun time Still looking for some 9" advice though. Unless someone whats to try and convince me it's a D35 just kidding.
