Default Fluctuating engine temp

The temp in my 94 4.0 auto constantly fluctuates from 190 ish to a little above 210 ish. I mean constantly as I can pretty much watch it sweep back and forth.

I am pretty sure its the T-stat opening and closing, but I wouldnt think it would be that noticable. (However I did have the same thing happen in a Toyota truck when I installed aftermarket gauges, the jeep does have stock though).

It doesnt overheat and the electric fan hasnt kicked on yet, but I confirmed that it is working.

I found a few receipts for the following:

T-stat and cooling flush - 2002

Water pump - 2008

It does have the tow package with the HD radiator and tranny cooler.

no worries. its still with in normal operating temp, and more than likely its the fan kicking in, cause it has a "fan clutch" that goes on and such at different temps and engine speeds, no worries, all is good

Since your rig isn't actually overheating and it's had all those items mentioned, changed recently. I'd say you probably just have a coolant gauage sending unit or the gauge going fruity on you. As we all know the readings you get from the stock gauges are merely a suggestion to what is actually going on with the motor most of the time.

Okay -

So it doesnt seem that there is air in the system?

What exactly is the difference between the factory standard and HD radiator?

I will keep an eye on it and probably swap out the T-stat and hoses before summer just to be safe.

I, personally, have never heard of a "factory HD" radiator in an XJ. My son's 87 XJ even had the off road and towing packages and it has the regular old stock plastic POS radiator. My 91 Sport had the plastic POS stock radiator, too. My 91 now has a CFS 3 core, baby!Just take a look at your radiator. If it is paper thin and the side tanks are plastic, it is the standard stocker. Toss it in the weeds and get yourself a 3 cor if fundage allows. You'll be glad you did.

Regarding the HD radiator -

I have the original window sticker and it noted something about the heavy duty cooling system as part of the tow package (I think, maybe I was dreamin and I dont have it with me )

And yes it is plastic so probably the same thing as all the rest.

X2 But if you want to know for sure remove the wire for the Coolant temp sending unit a GROUND it...If you guage pegs and hold there for a while your guage is good. IF not then....you guessed it, the sender is crap.

Well...

I was spraying my suspension bolts with some PB last night (getting ready for lift) and noticed a small amount of coolant on the rubber splash gaurd underneath.

So today I pull the grill and look further and notice coolant dripping off the end of the drain deal. I was okay with that as they can leak and are easy to replace, but upon further inspection I notice coolant seaping out of the pass side tank, Cool....

So it appears that I will replace all the cooling system components now. Any pointers while I am in there? Doing the radiator, hoses, and t-stat.

This Jeep is getting rediculous. Every time I turn around something else goes wrong with it. Maybe I shoulda kept my Nissan truck......

Yea, I was spoiled by my old 91 Laredo. Ran the hell out of it and never had any problems.

I think this one was built on a Friday....

In its defense it is the original radiator with 145k under its belt, not too bad I guess.
