So easy to pull the motor with the removable upper radiator support crossmember. Once you done it the first time, you won't even hesitate the next time around. Unbolt the T-Case and pull the motor and transmission as one. Make sure you drain the transmission or plug the output; still may get some fluid if you only drain it... Lift the engine with the hoist and push the Jeep out from underneath it.
Read every post & didn't see where anyone addressed WHY the flex plate is cracking ??? Replacing the flex plate does not solve the problem....From experience this job is not for the faint of heart....Its hard bull work all the way regardless if you pull the engine or Trans/transfer case....In my experience the reason for the cracked flex plate is: Either too much end play in the crankshaft, or the transmission front pump....You have to address either or both of these issues or you'll wind up replacing flex plate after flex plate.....

The flexplate started knocking after a mechanic misdiagnosed a bad distributer as a transmission problem, and took the transmission off. I think the mechanic somehow cracked the plate.
