I've ran 12.5's with no problems at all.

Yep 12.50's work great on a 15x7. The skinny wheel almost acts as a beadlock. If ya look at the baja trucks they run wide tires on skinny wheels

12.5 on a 7 will work but if you air down you will be asking for trouble

safest, largest on a 7 is 10.5

but then you have backspacing to worry about

10.5 will rub on stock backspacing
you will need to get a 15x7 with 4-4.5 BS or better

12.5 on 5-5.5bs, not happening, you can trim your fenders but unless your running 4.5" lift or better you'll rub just driving much less during a turn
12.5 on 3.5-4 BS is doable but then you should be on a 15x8 or 15x10 rim

He never asked about backspacing or rubbing, just simply how wide of a tire can he put on a 7" rim...but yes if he plan is to run stock wheels with 12.5's it will definatly rub...no matter his lift or if he trims or not, they'll hit the lca's when he turns...so he'll need some spacers to get them wheels out wider or new wheels with around 4" backspacing.

im very aware he didnt ask about backspacing

but i figured if he was asking, in seriousness, if a 12.5 can fit on a 7rim then he probably doesnt know or understand backspacing

so to not be a dick to a guy trying to learn and just say, yeah a 12.5 will work then he goes out and gets it and finds out he cant drive with it, i figured i would explain a little more detail.

again he wouldnt be asking if he didnt know, and since its obvious he hasnt been on here long enough to read enough articles/posts on here or he would have found his answer to the questions from reading, i figure a little extra knowledge on tires and rims wont hurt the man or woman, w/e he may be

What trouble would you be looking at airing down on a 7" rim with 12.50's?

Yeah i understand what your saying...but common sense would/should tell you that a 12.5 would never work on stock wheels with no spacers...and for someone dumb enough to mount the tires and install them THEN find out they wont work should not be allowed to own a jeep.lol

X2, i've always heard its better to have narrower rims so that you can air way down and not run the risk of popping a bead.

10.5's would still rub on the lca's...so he'd still need spacers...or adjust his steering.

your right
common sense would tell you - but this is america
we have shows about stupid people and lack of common sense

if he is a teenager or a brand new jeep owner who doesnt know
and only has the idea/pictures he's seen while driving past other jeeps he might not know

when i first started with jeeps back in the 90s, i wanted to throw this huge lift on with giant tires but after talking to people and finding out the right way to do it learned that i would of wasted time and money

everyone has got to start somewhere to learn

the trouble would be busting a bead while on a trail

now to give credit its due; i seen a guy run 8psi on 33 15x8 12.5 and be just fine
but ive also seen people break a bead when aired down on trails to 15-20 psi

a bead can still pop no matter what but its less likely to pop a bead is all im saying

on a 7 inch rim there is more pressure on the bead when airing down that keeps the bead seated as apposed to a 10 inch rim the only thing holding the bead on is the air so when you air down for wheeling there isnt much pressure pushing out to hold the bead

from a previous discussion on rim & tire size:
i believe the rule of thumb is 2.5-3x the size

Almost all manufacturers will allow a 32x11.5-15" tire on a 15x7" wheel,(though some spec a 7.5")

But you'd never see them recommend a 30"x11.5" tire on the same rim.

This is because the sidewall of a short/wide tire would be angled much more than a tall/wide tire.

Going wider than 11.5" is when things get controversial.
Some people swear by running 33x12.5's on 15x7's, others think that this is insane, and should never ever be done.

Truthfully, running 33x12.5's, and 35x12.5's on 15x7's is very common on race trucks (older stadium trucks, and pre-runners mostly).

Does that mean you should do it?
The tire manufacturer doesn't think you should (but they supply tires to race trucks, knowing they do it).

Does it mean it's safe? Pre-Runners run insane speeds over rough terrain. After spending $80K on a truck, why would they choose an unsafe, unreliable tire/wheel combo?

So, the widest tire on a 15x7", would be 11.5" wide (on a 32"+ tire), but if you tried running even wider, with 33" or taller tires, you wouldn't be the first.
End quote

BUT the other key to remember is, on that $80K off road machine runnign 7" wide rims, they also use true bead lock rims so it wont matter that they air down to 6psi on a 7" rim. they couldnt bust a bead if they pry-ed at it with a crowbar

Oh, I'm running 31x10.5 on 15x7
But they have 4.5bs - 0 rub even on full lock
