I have a 93 cherokee country with the dash that has NOTHING. It only has a picture of everything that will flash is something is wrong. I would like to switch it to the other cherokee dashes that have the rpms, gas needle, oil needle, temp needle, and all that...I was wondering which one would work, how I would hook it up (since i obv dont have something reading those now hence the no needle just the light) and if its something do-able by yourself with basic tools. Not sure if i have to drill holes or anything to put wire for temp readings and such???
I'm not familiar with Jeep wiring as far as the gauges, but on the older Ford trucks with similar setups (idiot lights instead of gauges), it is a big job to do a gauge conversion. You have to change out entire harnesses, I think add in an ammeter shunt (not so with the Jeeps, they have voltmeters...totally different animal), and change some wiring under the hood. The wiring configurations between the two setups is quite different in that case.
Not quite the answer you wanted, but hopefully it'll give you an idea of what to expect. For all I know, Jeeps could be different. I hope so. :\

Worked on my 98XJ idiot lights no tach to tach & all gauges. Was a simple pull & put but I did use a 98 donor. Even the shift light on a 5 speed manual lights. Only issue was my XJ had 121k on odometer & donor had 132k . To some this may make a difference but to me I will drive this till it dies & not worth going to DMV to get documented odometer change.

It's my understanding that every XJ was equipped for the provisions for every option available to some extent (e.g., there are wiring harnesses for fog lights even on models not equipped) so theoretically it would be an easy swap...
Uses the same plugs on the back, Theres a plug for the CEL/Brake/etc side, and a plug for the gauges. Just pull the old one and hook up the new one.
Youll have to put in an oil pressure sender (not switch) and I think thats about it...
Im not sure what years you can use.. Im not sure if the speedometer is cable driven on yours, or what year they changed that. Someone else will have to tell you.

alright awsome answers thanks guys because there was a whole bunch at the JY and cheap but i do not know a thing electrical so i figured to ask you all.... So for sure if i pull off my gauges, there SHOULD be all the wires and plugs to plug right into any gauge i get? for example, the temp gauges are already installed and theres just a loose wire behind my idiot light gauges??

Only two plugs, be sure of what year you need to get. I know 96 has an electronic speedo, so dont know when that changed or what years you can use in your jeep.
Here is a little writeup:
