Default First time my 4.0 let me down . . .

Sounds like my Batt is weak, took it to the dumb dumbs @ O'reily Auto Parts and they, they being some one who wants to sell batt's, starters, Alt's, but after checking all that stuff, he said Batt, Starter & charging system is cool, but still the starter goes - gurr gurr gurr, and just barely starts ? WTF Over !

Have you checked all of your grounds?

The year of your Jeep would be helpful also.

Did you check the ground wire on the starter itself?

Don't let them win bro. It can't be that big of a deal. With all the things that can go wrong with vehicles, starting issues like these are usually among the easiest to work with.

1. Connections are suspect. Remove battery cables and clean those and the battery posts until they are SHINY.

2. Try wiggling the shift lever when you crank it or try starting it in neutral. If either of these techniques work, you probably have a problem with the NSS (neutral safety switch). google it

3. Make sure oil is not leaking onto/into the starter

4. Make sure tapping the starter with a hammer and then trying to start it doesn't help - if it does - starter is bad

5. I doubt it's the starter relay, but you can try shorting it to see if it starts up (google it, try at your own risk)

6. I doubt it could be spark plug/cap/rotor/icm, but you never know, when was it last done?

6. Check all grounds

7. Check all grounds again

The starter is usually grounded to the engine block on a stud right next to the oil dipstick tube. Often, the ground strap corrodes and won't conduct well...and the connection at the block can degrade too. You will need to get in there and check.

Check this link out for lots of great tips to do to your Jeep. Not all will apply, but many will..

Is the starter soaked in oil from a leaking oil filter adapter?

Grounds. One from batt to fender, batt to block, block to firewall, starter to block. I believe that's all

Why not jump start it from a known good battery, and see how it turns the starter, to make sure it actually IS a battery problem ?

easy, non-greasy stuff first !

Bad grounds and rotten vacuum hoses sell a lot of parts......

Default Dudes, way to be ! ! !

Thanks for all the info, starter does have oil on it, sometimes I do have to wiggle the shifter (auto) and I thought there was only one ground, on the fender, wrong-O !
Plan, drink 3 bud cans, put on coveralls, greasy gloves, and start getting to the starter that will be "trustworthy", who needs to be stuck and towing it to the dealer, I can buy beer with those funds ! Yee haw ! Free beer for all !
This forum Rocks, there is hope now !

Default wow that was easy . . . I think

After my beers and getting ready to get dirty(my chick hates dirty finger nails), first turned the key, guur, guurr, gurrr, then while wiggling the shift handle, nothing. Must be the neutral safty switch or 'something' switch, hopefully they have one at the local store, I wounder what I'm in for in replacing this "johnsonater-do-hiky" ?
