You dont need sealant for the axels, if you use a gasket. You might use a little to hold the gasket in place. In most cases you can use JUST sealant on the axels. I use a cork or rubber gasket, and only enough sealant to hold the gasket in place during assembly. I avoid using sealants, unless they are required. Makes it easier to change, Next time around.

I got a gasket from the auto store, it was blue but I dont remember what brand it was. I just used a little diff fluid to help hold the gasket on while installing it. Some say to use the sealent instead of the gasket but if I ever have to take that cover off it will be easyier if there is not sealent on it.

Don't even use sealant to hold the gasket on... just stick a bolt through the doff cover and gasket... finger tighten them all in and then tighten...

I just run a bead of grey RTV around the cover and bolt it on with no gasket and let dry for a few hours before filling it.
Thats my way of doing it. Never had any leaks.
