Default Fan clutch check?????

I understand that fan should spin freely (by hand) when engine is cold.
And not spin and spin with resistance when engine is hot. (by hand)
Question is:
How freely when cold and how hard when hot?
How far will it turn if you push fan blade down (cold)?
1 turn, 1/4 turn? 1 blade?
How far when it is hot?
Thanks.

It's really not an entirely accurate test, nor is there a way to test it and be 100% sure that it's good or bad. The cooling system is one of the most important, if not the most important system of a car. If you suspect the fan clutch may be bad, for $40, you can't go wrong with getting a new one.

But like I've said in a few of your threads now, considering how nasty your coolant looked in the first thread you posted and that you have the 0331 head, you should replace every component of your cooling system. Including the fan clutch

Thanks for your advise, but I don't replace good parts. Engine is not overheating.

A new fanclutch is a litle hard to spin when cold too, it need to spinn a litle to get "loose/free" so if it spin easy when its cold replace it.

If it's not overheating then why are you worrying about your fan clutch? Since you don't replace good parts............................

Stick a broom handle in your fan blades have someone start your engine if broom handle kicks out clutch is good if fan blades don't spin you need a new clutch.

Now that just doesn't sound safe at all. More unsafe than the newspaper trick people speak of

OMG! Not the broom handle test again. That's just..........well never mind. Seems like they could have put the broom handle test in the FSM and saved a lot of print space. Wait a minute, a circling buzzard from the 1-800 law firm of Dewey, Cheatum and Howe has just landed. LOL

I say we end with you yet again posting a picture of how beautiful your coolant looked when you bought your XJ and then calling it a day.

The sad part is, a newbie will read the "broom stick test method", try it not knowing any better, and the situation could turn out really bad, really quick. It's quicker to just say it was (and still is) clean and green.
