I wasn't implying that Purolator "PureOne" and "Synthetic" are the same, the "PureOne" has a paper/synthetic blend media and usually costs around $6-7 where as the "Synthetic" has wire-backed fully synthetic media and is uaually around $10 (Wal-Mart is not the only place that sells them, several auto-parts stores in my area stock the Purolator "Synthetic" line).
I suspect that NAPA is selling this as "synthetic" because the media doesn't break down like paper does. XP is junk. Check out the following link: http://www.ihpartsamerica.com/forums...filters-2.html
Not sure where this came from, it is patently false. You can have very high filtration cellulose and synthetic media. The problem with high filtration paper is that it becomes very restrictive at higher efficiencies. This is why the most effective filters on the planet, down to the single digit micron ratings, from Fleetguard, Donaldson, Baldwin, etc use a synthetic media.
The rest I totally agree with though. Give that link a gander.

-change your filter, I like Bosch, and add 1 quart ATF, drive 50-100 miles
-change your filter again, change the oil, add can Seafoam, drive 1000 miles
-change your filter and oil again, add 1/2 qt Marvel Mystery Oil, drive 1000 miles, other 1/2 qt in your gas(lubricates your fuel pump, FPR, injectors)
-change your filter and oil again, Last time, I use Mobil 1 Synthetic
-change your filter and add oil to top off every 3,500 miles
-change filter and oil with Mobil 1 every 10,000 miles on the 10,000 (100,000 110,000 120,000 ...)
I have done this on 3 XJ's with 150,000+ and all are quiet.

I'd humbly suggest most folks rethink that long of an OCI. While M1 is capable of that sort of OCI in the right engine, the typical 4.0 is not the right engine. Too much fuel contamination and blowby in most of these motors to leave the oil in that long. I'd at very least run an oil analysis at 5K and see how it's doing.

You are changing the filter and adding ? 1/2 qt. every 3.5k, full change at 10k.
If you feel more comfortable, Change the interval- filter and top off oil at 2500 miles ad filter and oil change at every 5000 miles.
