Round **** on left side of radio. Dial it up until you no longer hear ticking.

What's your oil pressure and what's the oil/filter you are using?

If you switch oils it may get louder.

Deal with it. Before and after a lot of work.

Rotella may over time clean that stuck/leaky check valve in the lifter. You also may want to pull the valve cover and check for a worn rocker fulcrum.

Is it just on a cold start or what?

That's a big one, even if it's the flexplate when it warms up that seems to change pitch or go away. How is your oil pressure at startup and warm? Did you change your oil lately, is it up to the full line? What oil filter do you use?

Try a different oil. Use the one that runs quietest in YOUR Jeep. make sure its lifters and not something else, ie flexplate exhaust leak ect Turn the volume up. Ignore it.

My 93 has it also. Some noise for over the last 100K. It comes and goes. The oil pressure has always been good. So it could also be piston slap or in my head. As long as its not banging loud try to ignore it.
As said by others, different oils "appear" to act differently. Not to start an oil war. Ive been running Rotella T-6 and have decent results. Still not silent but quieter than 15-40 Rotella in my opinion. Other guys have had different positive results too.
The one thing almost everyone agrees on is a quality filter.
Good luck with your tick.

Ron
