I'm planning on purchasing a cherokee 5-speed 6 cyl. 4x4. The year I'm currently looking at is a 91.
Would really appreciate any information on areas that you owners are aware of that can be very expense to fix, and or not a problem but you need to know.
The car is a Cal. car with no rust, unless like a lot of cars there would be locations that are prone to it.
Besides normal maintenance issues I would be interested in updating the performance to get better MPG. I have read about Edge Products but from what I read their product is for latter models. Any other proven products that you can help with.
Thank you all in advance.

Well Dennis welcome to CF. The Cherokee is divided up by years and the parts are Very specific for a 91. That year and 92 are on their own so parts availability in a parts house may be limited. These years were the advent of the OBDI computers and after that were the second generation OBDII system. We have a few members here with 91s and they seem to love them.
As to the MPG game it is pretty much the same with all years and models. the more air in and the most exhaust out will yield the best MPG.
For the chip you mentioned the consensus seems to be that the computer in the Jeep will negate everything the chip tries to do. This means that it is a waste of money.
Hope this has been of some benefit to you.
Please go to our introduction page and tell us a little about you and the Jeep you are contemplating purchasing.

Thanks for the heads up on the 91-92's. I own and rebuilt a C-2 Corvette, 1965. I finished it in 2007 after 3 years. Your never done, as I just installed a 5-speed trans.

Interesting Dennis maybe you could post some pics of it in other vehicles section. I used to have a 62 back around 68 or so but sold it when our daughter was on her way into this world. The sacrifices you make as a parent!!
